Commander Kim Starsmith

Well, that had been… entirely and utterly embarrassing.

At the time, he’d thought he was doing the right thing. Okay, at the time, he’d gone to find her because… he hadn’t had another option.

His mission was just about to start. It was important for him to be 100 percent there and ready to give 100 percent. But he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her. Solution? Go see her.

Result? He now felt like a complete idiot.

That spiel at the end about the Academy meaning nothing and grades being irrelevant when you got into real danger… everyone kind of knew that. And it was useless coming from someone like him. He was a teacher, for God’s sake. He handed out grades. If he didn’t believe in them, he shouldn’t be doing that.

But…. He grabbed his face, his fingers easily squeezing in behind his shield. He scratched it wildly.

He sighed.

There was a beep from his armor. It warned him his mission was about to leave. He picked up the pace.

He kept thinking about her.

Weirdly, the comment about the fact she threw toast on other people played around his mind, too. For no good reason whatsoever. It hadn’t even been that funny a joke. So why had he laughed?

Probably because he needed something to laugh at right now. It was that or cry.

He reached the hangar bay.

The mission was getting prepped. Everybody looked grim.

He had to wipe the last remnants of his smile from his lips.

Because this was no laughing matter.

The station had continued to scan the strange coffin they’d found. There was something with a massively high energetic yield within. What, they still couldn’t tell.

If you’d spoken to him this morning, before the incident, he would’ve told you it was just another boring chunk of space rock. Now it could be anything.

“We’re heading out in five,” the chief engineer said as he walked up to the small transport they would be taking.

Small, yes, but also a prototype. Kim frowned. He quickly accessed the information for the mission that had already been loaded onto his onboard computer. He scanned through it until he found the approved vessel. “Ha?” His brow must’ve clunked down obviously.

The engineer noticed. His lips pressed into a tight line. “The change of ship comes right from the top. Seems the admiral’s worried about this one. Wants us to have the best firepower we can. I imagine that’s why you’re on the mission. Do me a favor – if we are suddenly visited by crazy energy beings from beyond the Edge, try to save us all.”

It was hard to tell if the man simply had a dry sense of humor, or if that was an actual request.

Kim took another step, then everything kind of struck him.

This morning, his life had been normal. Now they were all… well, on the Edge. Literally.

As the hangar bay doors opened behind him, and permanent shields glimmered, protecting them from the vagaries of space, his eyes darted out, past the last star, right to the speck of darkness beyond.
